The UK government has introduced new regulations to transform how food waste is stored, collected, and managed across all sectors. These reforms are designed to improve hygiene, increase recycling rates, and reduce the volume of organic waste sent to landfill. Under the new rules, all businesses with more than 10 employees must have dedicated, enclosed, and traceable food waste storage systems in place. Local authorities are also mandated to ensure their waste infrastructure is compliant by 31 March 2026.
The regulations form part of a broader environmental strategy aligned with the government’s commitment to achieving net zero and promoting a circular economy. Non-compliance will result in enforcement actions and potential fines, making early adoption both a legal necessity and a practical priority.
